Estocada
In bullfighting, la suerte de matar marks the most decisive and symbolic moment of the corrida. It is when the matador puts everything on the line—technique, courage, and composure—condensed into a single, final gesture. The most esteemed execution is the estocada en todo lo alto, where the sword must enter cleanly between the bull’s shoulders and reach the heart. Other variations, such as the estocada caída, tendida, or desprendida, may be effective but are considered less orthodox.
If the initial thrust fails to bring a swift end, the matador may perform the descabello, a precise strike to the back of the neck meant to end the bull’s suffering quickly.
This painting captures that climactic moment: a face-to-face encounter between man and beast, filled with tension and drama. It marks the conclusion of a ritual of power, surrender, and fate.
